Bringing Our Children Home From Carlisle Indian School Cemetery

May 9, 2023 @ 5:00 PM - 8:00 PM

Carlisle Indian Industrial School was open between 1879 and 1918. It was the first off-reservation federal Indian boarding school designed to forcibly assimilate Native American children into non-Native culture. Nearly 11,000 Native children were sent to Carlisle, including children from the Winnebago Tribe. While many children returned home from Carlisle, children died at Carlisle as well. Two Winnebago children, Edward Hensley and Samuel Gilbert, died at Carlisle and remain buried at the Carlisle Cemetery in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. Today, the Winnebago Tribal Historic Preservation office is working to bring these children home. Please join us on May 9th at 5pm to learn more about the process to bring our children home.
