Communications

The Communications/PR Office leads all aspects of Communication and Public Relations aspects for the Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska, including the Winnebago Indian Newspaper. The office is also tasked with spearheading media relations, internal/external communications, social media management and training, special event management, and advising Tribal Council on all media and communications affairs.
Goals of the Communication Office Include:

  • Work towards the communications goals of the WTN by sharing information with the key audiences of the WTN in a timely manner
  • Direct the dissemination of information through multiple channels in order to best reach key audiences
  • Work towards developing proactive communications solutions
  • Stay informed or trained on the latest PR trends and tactics
  • Develop strong relationships with all departments and WTN stakeholders
  • Design and lead all social media strategies (including website)
  • Build relationships with members of the media
  • Design communications-related policies for Tribal Council adoption
  • Coordinate press conferences and media inquiries on behalf of the Tribe
  • Prepare spokespersons to represent the best possible image of the Tribe while communicating the Tribe’s position, interests and goals
  • Promote the Tribe’s programs, initiatives, departments and agencies through tours, public speaking engagements, and participation in community events and programs
  • Formulate and manage an annual PR budget
  • Maintain and build the capacity of the Communications/PR Program

On June of 2016, The Winnebago Tribe hired Garan Coons as the Communications Officer. Garan is a native of Winnebago and received his Bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design and Marketing from Wayne State College.
